Transmission. We hear about this vehicle part all the time, yet it’s workings and functioning can be a bit confusing. It’s important to maintain, hard to reach (for most cars), and certainly expensive to replace. So how do you tell if you need to flush your transmission fluid?

The first step is to take a look at it. Whether you have a dipstick in the top visible part of the engine, or you have to crawl underneath and find the plug to see, the color and level should the be the same as when it went in. You don’t want to wait for a color change or smell before getting the fluid flushed, as it is usually too late at that point. The most common estimate is to get the transmission flushed every 30,000 miles or so.

If the fluid has a small amount of floating black spots, it is completely normal. However, if there are a large number of them or they are metallic in color, DO NOT flush the system. At this point, the transmission is probably pretty close to the end of its life. If you flush it, it most likely will not work again. It might be best to drive the vehicle until the transmission gives out, while saving up for a new one. There’s no real way to tell how long it will last, but it’s better to get it replaced sooner.
